To what extent have your perceptions of belonging been influenced by the texts you have analyze? My knowledge of the concept of belonging has been vastly improved by the texts I have studies in this unit. The texts that will be discussed be the book Romulus, my father, the film a beautiful understanding, and the song only. The book Romulus, my father is the biography of Romulus Gaita by His son Raimond. The book explores the intent of Romulus as he moves from easterly Europe to Australia to start a new life. His experience in Australia gives us insight into the prejudice that Romulus and other European migrants set about when living in our society. A good example of this is the operation that was assigned to Romulus after immigrating to Australia; although he was a fine blacksmith in Yugoslavia he was not able to do this job because the regime didnt recognise his qualification. This highlights how His culture was rejected by the Australians. however though Romulus lived out the majority of His life in Australia He never recognised it as home because he grew up in another country with a severely unalike landscape. To him the bare, harsh landscape of the Australian outback was very unkindly and foreign.

This negative view of the landscape is symbolic of His isolation from Australian culture, also the fact that the only lifelong friends Romulus made (Hora & Mitru) were Roumanian immigrants who he could relate to. He felt no fate to integrate and become a part of society and chose to seclude himself by living on his property; this view of life is shared with the character of tail end Nash from the film A splendiferous Mind.
