Being a slave, Fredrick Douglass was forbidden from accomplishment to read or write. His first lessons came from his fancy woman, who in the beginning was a kind woman, but time changes us all. She taught him how to read and by doing so Douglass sought new truths and powers. He was able to find the truth in the motivations of the slaveholders. He read Sheridan and from it was able to address his thoughts. Reading also helped Douglass meet the arguments brought forward about sustaining slavery.
Though learning to read helped Douglass find truths and understanding, it hurt to a greater extent than it helped. Douglass now more than ever wanted to be free. By adaptation the books Douglass fell into a pit of hopes and knowledge, it showed him all the beauties of life, but no way out. No ladder to extend him to his freedom. He well-educated of abolitionists and how they saw slavery. He saw that that there was a different way of life.

The more Douglass read, the more he regretted his own existence. He would have or else been a woman chaser than a slave. At least the beast was able to do as he pleased. Being a beast would also cease his thinking. No matter what he did Douglass could only think of the horrible life he was to lead and the people that brought it upon him. He no prolonged saw his Mistress as a kind hearted woman that slavery had changed, but rather one that had gone to Africa, taken him from his home and obligate him to work.
