William Shakespeares The disturbance
Shakespeares play The Tempest furnishs the blurry difference between barbarism and civility. Referring to the characters within The Tempest, Stephen Greenblatt questions who is the school man, and who is the barbarian (3060)? In 1.2 Shakespeare presents Prospero, a man of civilized demeanor who speaks of himself as a sympathetic care giver; and the nasty character Caliban who is thought of as a strange beast (Shakespeare 2.2.29 3087). Although Caliban is presented as a barbaric individual, Prospero is expected to be a civilized man, but treats individuals with no consideration as he manipulates them with his magical powers. The characters may not appear as they expect and these aspects are very important to ponder when viewing Shakespeares play The Tempest.
It could be suggested that Shakespeares portrayal of the unregenerate maliciousness of Antonio and Sebastian, conjoined with goodness of Gonzalo might be representation of the noncombatant versus the barbarians, if it were not for the disturbing Caliban (Greenblatt 3060). Greenblatt points out that the name Shakespeare chose for the character Caliban is an anagrammatize for the term cannibal (3060).
Through Calibans character Shakespeare challenged the darkest European fears of the dreaded Wild Man (Greenblatt 3060). Shakespeare uses his imagination by depiction Caliban as deformed, lecherous, evil-smelling, treacherous, naïve, drunken, lazy, rebellious, violent and devil worshiping (Greenblatt 3060). Caliban the barbarian steals the show with his monstrous appearance.
Miranda and Prosperos opinions of Calibans humanity contrast greatly. Prospero refers to Caliban as A devil, on whose nature / Nurture can neer stick (Shakespeare 4.1.188-89 3105).
