We hope to offer you a candid picture of student life, and what you should consider as you prepare your MBA application. Accepted: Can you tell us a little about yourself? Where are you from? Where did you study as an undergrad? What did you major in? Robyn: I grew up outside of Boston, Massachusetts but my parents are Canadian so I have always spent summers and family vacations up here. I graduated from Union College in Schenectady, New York in 2006 with a double major in Psychology and French. Believe it or not, Psychology and French didn’t point me in a clear path so after graduating I took an opportunity to work abroad in Scotland for a year followed by a few months of traveling before landing back in Boston to work for a business services start-up company. Accepted: Which other programs were you considering other than Toronto Rotman? What tipped the scales to favor Rotman? Robyn: While exploring MBA opportunities, I was focused on finding a program within a city that I could see myself living and working in afterwards. One of the important takeaways of an MBA is the network and the relationships that you build throughout it. I wanted to make sure that I could take advantage of that after completing the program. This narrowed my search down to Boston and Toronto. While Boston has very strong schools, I was eager for a change and saw Toronto as an opportunity to experience a bigger, more diverse city. As I researched programs, spoke with admissions offices and current students all schools talked about the fact that they create business leaders. What stood out about Rotman is that they were one of the few schools that told me how they do this. Through their top-ranked faculty and focus on Integrative Thinking, I felt as though I had a really solid grasp of how the program would help me grow as a professional. Accepted: What is your favorite thing about studying in Toronto? Least favorite? Robyn: My favorite aspect about studying in Toronto is the diversity of opportunities both on and off campus. The size of the city and reputation of the school attracts an incredible range of speakers on campus with my personal favorites including Behavioural Economist Dan Ariely, IDEO’s Tim Brown and the New York Times’ columnist David Brooks. Outside of school, every weekend provides something new. Toronto is made up of many small neighborhoods, each with small shops, restaurants and bars to explore. My least favorite aspect of studying in Toronto is the high cost of living. While there are a lot of benefits to being located in downtown Toronto, they come with a price. Rent is on par with Boston and other cities that I have lived in; however, the costs of other everyday necessities like food, public transportation, cell phones, and clothing are higher. The transition back to a student budget was a challenge in itself and the high cost of downtown living makes it a bit trickier. Accepted: Can you recommend a cozy coffee shop or library – a good spot to hang out with friends and/or study? Robyn: My favorite place to escape campus for a coffee with friends is L’espresso by Mercurio, a cafà © around the corner from Rotman. Their lattes and biscotti are the perfect pick-me-up after a morning of classes. Accepted: What was the internship application process like? What role did Rotman play in helping you secure your summer internship at Bain Company? Robyn: The internship application process is intense. I started the program without a hard-set idea of what I wanted to do afterwards. Throughout the fall, as I networked with people both on and off campus, I narrowed my search to management consulting. While I have had a lot of experience on both sides of the typical â€Å"behavioral† interview, the consulting case interview was entirely new to me. I would never have been as successful had it not been for the Rotman Management Consulting Association and second year students that organized weekly workshops, resume review sessions, and mock interviews throughout the fall and early winter. My classmates were also incredibly collaborative, and we spent hours each week giving each other mock interviews and providing feedback. Each of the firms came on campus through Rotman’s Career Center in January with interviews starting immediately afterwards. Throughout the interview process I was most surprised by how hands-on each of the firms were. After interviews, whether successful or not, each firm provided very constructive feedback that helped me grow and improve throughout the recruiting process. Overall, it was a combination of my peers, Rotman, and the consulting firms that helped me succeed in landing my internship. Accepted: What are the MBA Games? What has your experience with the games been like so far? Robyn: The MBA Games is a three day event where every MBA program within Canada sends a team of students to compete in sports, academics, and school spirit. It is an incredibly fun weekend with over 700 students. Last year the games were in chilly Edmonton, Alberta. My days were filled playing ultimate Frisbee and inner-tube water polo while nights were spent at cowboy bars. This year we’re much closer to home in Hamilton, Ontario. I’ll be suiting up for a Strategy Case Competition and then trying to channel my inner-Canadian with a day of floor-hockey. Overall, it’s a great weekend to meet students from other programs and build close-knit relationships with the 40 Rotman students that are chosen to attend. Accepted: What was the most challenging aspect of the MBA admissions process for you and how did you overcome it? Robyn: The hardest part of the MBA admissions process for me was the personal statements. When I applied, Rotman required (1) 500 word personal statement and (3) 250 word essays. Trying to express everything I wanted to convey in so few words was incredibly challenging. I relied on friends and family to give me honest feedback. The example I remember most clearly was when I sent my father my essay on an example of failure, having spent 2 days coming up with a good example and trying to squeeze it into 250 words. He came back and told me that I had missed the mark and recommended that I start over. As hard as it was to hear, he was absolutely right, and in retrospect it helped me recognize the importance of having people around you who provide you with honest feedback and help you to grow and improve. Pierre de Fermat Pierre de Fermat was born in the year 1601 in Beaumont-de-Lomages, France. Mr. Fermats education began in 1631. He was home schooled. Mr. Fermat was a single man through his life. Pierre de Fermat, like many mathematicians of the early 17th century, found solutions to the four major problems that created a form of math called calculus. Before Sir Isaac Newton was even born, Fermat found a method for finding the tangent to a curve. He tried different ways in math to improve the system. This was his occupation. For example, the Mylan pharmaceutical company with regards to their recent price hiking EpiPen dispute. Mylan is one of the largest global pharmaceutical companies in the world. They market many products to other companies, governments and even sell retail directly to customers. This large company claims to have strong Corporate Social Responsibility attitudes and has a goal for themselves to increase access to affordable healthcare among other things. Discrimination has been on the battlefield for centuries whether it pertains to race, gender, color, sex, religion, beliefs, or pay. At the forefront of this generation and many before us is workplace discrimination as it relates to pay. This form of discrimination reflects the common myths and biases that men are the breadwinners or providers for their family, and women are responsible for taking care of the home and children. In 2014, women who worked all year earned 79 cents for every dollar her male counterpart earned (Council of Economic Advisers, 2016). Women, who are equally trained, educated, and share the same experience as men, are not getting equal pay. Women have proven that they can produce the same results, have the same education, and have the same capacity to accomplish the same tasks as men if not more. If equal pay for equal work is to be beneficial to all, legislation must specifically highlight and make provisions that directly affect women of minority groups as well as women in general. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009 It was the first bill signed into law by President Barack Obama in 2009 for equal pay for equal work. It restored the protection against pay discrimination that was stripped away by the Supreme Courts decision in Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire ; Rubber Company. The Act extended the time period in which claimants can bring pay discrimination claims, enabling victims of pay discrimination to seek redress when they otherwise could not. For years, Lilly Ledbetter was paid at least 15 percent less than the lowest-paid man in her equivalent position. The Act reinstates prior law and makes clear that pay discrimination claims on the basis of sex, race, national origin, age, religion and disability accrue whenever an employee receives a discriminatory paycheck, as well as when a discriminatory pay decision or practice is adopted, when a person becomes subject to the decision or practice, or when a person is otherwise affected by the decision or practice. The law is retroactive to May 28, 2007, the day before the Court issued its ruling in Ledbetter (National Womens Law Center, 2013). It changed the legal process around claims of gender discrimination, one of many factors contributing to the pay gap (Council of Economic Advisers, 2016). The passage of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act also promoted voluntary compliance by employers, allowed employees to assess the validity of their claims, and responded to workplace realities (National Womens Law Center, 2013).The wage gap by genderThe gender wage gap has many causes and contributors, including differences in education, experience, occupation and industry, and family responsibilities Women account for 47% of the labor force, up from 29 percent in 1948. The typical woman working full-time full-year earns 21% less than the typical man. The pay gap closed by 17 percentage points between 1981 and 2001, it had remained flat since 2001. The gap closed by 1. 8 percentage point from 2012 to 2013 and by an additional percentage point between 2013 and 2014. The gender pay gap in the United States has not changed substantially over the last 15 years, other industrialized nations have made greater progress in closing the gap. The gender wage gap in the United States is about 2.5 percentage points larger than the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) average (Council of Economic Advisers, 2016). Studies conducted across all sectors (public and private) also report that the gender gap in human capital explains majority of the pay gap and that women are oftentimes punished for time away from work (Alkadry and Bishu, 2016).The latest release from the World Economic Forum—the Gender Gap Report 2016 indicates that in the past 10 years, the global gender gap across education and economic opportunity and politics has closed by 4 percent, while the economic gap has closed by 3 percent (Verniers and Vala, 2018). The repo rt goes on to say that it will take the world another 118 years or until 2133 to close the economic gap entirely. Women are more likely to work part-time or be employed in low-paid jobs and not take on management positions. The motherhood myths have the potential to create psychological barriers impairing womens attempt to seek power in the workplace and mens involvement in child care (Verniers and Vala, 2018). Motherhood myths might operate more broadly as justifications for gender discrimination regarding career opportunity. The basic principle of anti-discrimination has been enacted by many countries in the second half of the 20th century, some measures are still adopted nowadays, such as the obligation for employers to publish information by 2018 about their bonuses for men and women as part of their gender pay gap reporting, a provision recently taken by the UK government (Verniers and Vala, 2018).Several factors have contributed to the gap between mens and womens wages. The Equal Pay Act (part of the Fair Labor Standards Act), forbids employers to compensate women differently for jobs tha t are substantially equal, that is, almost identical. All forms of pay are covered by this law, including salary, overtime pay, bonuses, stock options, profit sharing and bonus plans, life insurance, vacation and holiday pay, cleaning or gasoline allowances, hotel accommodations, reimbursement for travel expenses, and benefits. Non-Hispanic black woman made only 60 percent of a typical non-Hispanic white mans earnings, while the typical Hispanic woman earned only 55 percent. An obvious clue to deciding whether or not there are too many people is the lack of nutritious food in some countries. This lack of food is caused b two possible factors. First, the people in other wealthier places inhabiting the earth are taking up much of the more nutritious foods. For instance, if a family lost one child the family had other children to take the place of the lost â€Å"employee†. Where technology comes into play is that this new technological advancement has lessened the amount of children a family should have to survive. Hence, more technology means less â€Å"employees† a family must need. This decrease in family members has made more room for jobs. Today there are more jobs than there are people to fulfill them. This proves that there are jobs available if people need them but some people are not willing to find or take these jobs. Therefore there is plenty of room for the world’s populations to not only survive but also to prosper. There has also been another concern for the wo rld, the depletion of natural resources. But, because there are not too many people in the world the supply of natural resources, which are used by every person all over the world every single day, the depletion of natural resources has not been completely used. Here again locally in the United States most of the living conditions are not bad. Many people in the United States have a stable home. The percentage of homeless people is a mere .2% in the United States (Enth and National Alliance to End Homelessness). Not all of the homes are extravagant, but all the homes provide shelter. The land that these homes and industries are built on is abundant. Even though some of the land now is not able to inhabit living creatures or people, if the crisis came up of a shortage of land there could be useable land available. Point being, that yes, some of the inhibited land is not capable of living things no one has had to even begun trying to inhabit the jungles or sometimes frozen land.
