ane of the key concepts of psychoanalysis according to Sigmund Freud is that the human mind stern be divided into two main graphemes. One part of the human mind is the conscious mind which has everything that we are mindful of. A part of this includes the memory, which is not always part of mind but can be retrieved easily at both time and brought into consciousness. Freud called this ordinary memory the preconscious (Cherry, n.d. para.7). The other division in the human mind is the unconscious(p) mind which contains all sorts of significant and disturbing material which we need to keep out of knowingness beca expenditure they are too threatening to acknowledge fully (McLeod, 2009, para.6). This unconscious, although secret from the conscious, still continues to influence human personalities and behaviour.
McLeod (2008, para.2) states that Freud saw the psyche coordinate into 3 parts, the id, ego and superego which develops at different stages of our lives. The id is the biological organization of personality and represents two core drives, the sex instinct, knows as concupiscence and the aggressive instinct known as Thanatos. The id is governed by the sport principal and is ir sharp-witted (McLeod, 2003, p.83).
This id needs gratification of its desires, and if not satisfied, it could puzzle out anxiety or tension. The ego, governed by the reality principal, is the conscious and rational part of the mind which ensures that the needs of id are expressed in an acceptable manner. The superego is the aspect that holds the internalized moral standards and ideals from both parents and society and alike provides guidelines for making judgments.
One other concept of psychoanalysis is the use of defence mechanisms to protect ourselves from feelings of anxiety of guilt which arise because our id or superego becomes too demanding (McLeod, 2009, para.8).
